Beware the Coupon Monster!

Those discount coupon deals might not be all they're cracked up to be...

printable coupons

The world of online coupons is exploding - whether free coupons, printable coupons or any discount coupon for that matter. And that's great news for consumers...maybe. "What do you mean 'maybe' - you say. "Aren't I getting a deal when I buy one of the online printable coupons?" Maybe yes and maybe no.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

Let's be real clear. Coupons are a great way to save. You can go online and print restaurant coupons, discount coupons for products and services - all with the hope that you'll save. And that's a good goal to have. But in this writer's opinion, "All that glitters is not gold."

I'd like to talk about the monster that seems to be dominating today's online coupon world offering discounts and deals - Groupon. It is reported to be the fastest growing company in the history of the US. Not just for discount coupons - for any company! Every day they send out enticing emails offering coupons for "big discounts" on a full range of products and services.

What could be wrong with that, you say?

Well to be fair, there is a lot that is right with Groupon and they are impressive. They are truly a monster in the online coupon marketing sense but as with all monsters, they can run you over if you get too close. How so, you ask?

To answer that let's look at Groupon's target. It's you, the consumer. "Well, duh" you say. But please realize that when a company that big focuses its considerable resources on individual shoppers, you might be at a disadvantage. Make no mistake, they want your money, your credit card and they'll use every trick in the book to get it. And to be fair (again) it's not all bad, you really can get some deals.

But it might help you if you knew a little about their strategy and tactics so you could avoid some of the pitfalls - at least level the playing field. Consider:

The first thing to know is that not all discounts are what they're cracked up to be. The individual businesses are asked to give up a 50% discount as a minimum in order to entice you to try them. Do you think it's possible that some businesses would raise their price for that service first before discounting it? hmmm...
Next it would help to see the tactic they use to get you to take out your credit card. In the old world of sales fundamentals it's called "The fear of loss takeaway." It's when an ad says, "Hurry, buy now before they're all gone." Or, "Supply is limited so get it while you can." Or, "buy yours now before someone else gets it." And so it goes. It's important to know they (artfully) use those tactics to manipulate you, to get you to take action and buy.
And finally, you often can get the same or better discounts, deals and online coupons absolutely free if you simply dig a little bit without giving in to the impulse to buy "right now."

There are alternatives to the big monster. Check around before you pull that credit card trigger. You'll be glad you did!

Coupons Create Crazy, Creative Ways to Save Big - Just Ask the Krazy Coupon Ladies

"Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey" is everything you ever needed to know about using coupons to save big. I have to admit upfront I was skeptical at first that coupons could provide the kinds of savings the authors promise, but as I read through the secrets in this book, I was completely won over. These ladies know what they are doing with coupons-it's completely ethical, really not that "krazy" at all except when it comes to the gigantic savings, and some of the shrewdest business advice imaginable.

free printable coupons

I'm not going to give away all the secrets here. I'll just say that these really aren't "secrets" and the Krazy Coupon Ladies are not selling anything other than this book-there are no gimmicks, no additional purchases necessary, no expensive special kits to buy, and no overpriced seminars to attend. Everything you need to know is in this book. And it's more than just advice on how to use coupons to save a couple of dollars on peanut butter, mayonnaise, or ketchup-it's practical financial advice on how to protect your wallet, how to stockpile for emergencies, how to prepare for your future, how to provide you with lasting financial security in times of adversity, and also how to have some extra money for fun-to take vacations or whatever you want to do with it. Coupons are vital for such times as when the economy is bad, or as the Krazy Coupon Ladies explain, when gas prices are high:

PRINTABLE COUPONS

The price of oil directly affects the price of groceries. The more it costs to transport groceries, the more you'll have to pay to get them. The shipping and oil industries are often unpredictable, so it's comforting to have a stockpile. If truckers go on strike, if gasoline prices quadruple, you can insulate yourself from the effects by having a stockpile. It's nice to think that if gas prices jumped to per gallon tomorrow, I wouldn't have to drive to the store twice a week for overpriced cereal. I could just walk out to my garage and congratulate myself for stocking up when boxes of cereal were

What I didn't expect from this book was to find out that Coupons Are Fascinating!-really! I had no idea about the history of the coupon from its origins in the late 1800s to its Internet printable versions and the fraudulent scams they have engendered. Did you know there are coupon clearinghouses operated by prisoners? Did you know what all those numbers and symbols on a barcode mean? You will learn all this and more in "Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey."

And what about that title? It's funny. It describes how shoppers will have to wait a little longer while you use all those coupons, but so what? You'll be saving tons of money. The authors' many stories about their shopping and couponing adventures are equally priceless for their humor. And throughout are numerous wonderful cartoons depicting Krazy Coupon Ladies doing what they do best-savings tons of money.

Every step from finding great coupons, to how to use them to double and triple your savings, and what to do when checkout cashiers and store managers argue with you-how to educate them actually since you'll know far more than any store manager about coupons-is all provided here. And to top it all off, a lot of additional and completely free information is available on the Krazy Coupon Ladies' website.

This book may be the best financial investment you will ever make. You can easily earn back one hundred times the price of this book within one year-and if you follow all the advice in "Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey," you may even earn back five hundred times the price. So get ready to save, and even make money.

What Are Coupon Clipping Services And Why Use One?

If you've been looking into buying your groceries with coupons to save money on your food bill, you may have heard about coupon clipping services. What exactly is a coupon clipping service?

free printable coupons

Basically, a coupon clipping service is where you go to pay someone else to clip your coupons for you. These businesses are usually small operations, sometimes family operations, that offer surprisingly large and varied amount of coupons for groceries and as well as other types of products and services.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

There are many of these services on the Internet, as well as off the Internet. Some services you may want to try out are TheCouponClippers.com, TheCouponMaster.com and CouponCarryOut.com

How Do Coupon Clipping Services Work?

Grocery coupons are free and legally cannot be bought and sold. When you use a clipping service, what you're paying for isn't for the coupons but for the services they provide, which is to collect, clip, sort, and ship the coupons.

A majority of these services normally offer coupons that are already cut, but some services just resell bulk, uncut inserts straight from the Sunday newspapers.

Some services require you to sign up as a member and pay an initial fee which is used a credit in your account that you use for purchases. After the initial credit is used up, you'd pay as you make additional purchases. Different companies have different policies, but most services require a minimum amount of purchase per order. Most services charge between .08 and .15 for each run-of-the-mill coupon, but slightly higher price for hard to find or high value ones. Some sellers charge a flat shipping charge no manner how much your order is.

Why use a Coupon Clipping Service?

Coupon clipping services is not for everyone. If you only use coupons casually you may be able to get all the coupons you need from newspapers and free grocery coupon sites on the Internet. But for people just starting out wanting to become super coupon clippers, these services are easy ways to build up a large inventory of grocery coupons.

The services are also great for people who don't have the time and patience to clip their own coupons but still want to be able to save money on groceries using coupons. Coupon clipping services also give people the flexibility of getting only the coupons they want without having to sort through all the unwanted ones from the Sunday paper inserts and also cut down on the time and effort that's needed to organize and retrieve all those coupons.

Many seasoned coupon clipper use coupon clipping services as part of their strategy of using coupons to save money on groceries. They order multiple copies of coupons that they need to stock up on items that are on sale at their local grocery store. They also use the services to get coupons that may not available in their area.

Not all coupon clipping services are alike. There are many such services on the Internet so look around and try some out with small orders to see which ones meet your needs.

Coupon Usage - Are All Hispanics Alike?

Response Magazine reported recently that free-standing insert (FSI) coupons emerged as a key component in promotional programs of many manufacturers and retailers during 2009 with more than 272 million pieces dropped. But what was the coupon redemption rate in 2009?

printable coupons

Well, it seems many cent-off coupons were put to use. The Experian Simmons National Consumer Survey showed that 7 out of 10 households used coupons in 2009. Although most were looking to save money, others used coupons to try new products. One out of two consumers claimed they used FSIs cent-off coupons, placing this coupon category at the top followed by coupons received by mail, found in packages, magazines, on the Internet or handed out in or near stores.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

For many years, coupon redemption among Hispanic consumers has been reported to be lower than the general population due to a number of factors including cultural barriers, lack of familiarity with the redemption process, different product preferences, wrong distribution channels, requirement of multiple purchases, low coupon face value, and refusal to accept coupons by stores frequented by Hispanics, among others.

However, the last couple of years in a down economy may have help Hispanics to get with the program. In 2009 Hispanics weren't too far behind the average non-Hispanic household as 6 out of 10 Hispanic households used coupons, with Puerto Ricans leading the way (67%), followed by Cubans (62%), other households of Hispanic heritage (60%) and Mexicans (57%). Nearly 4 out of 10 Hispanic consumers used coupons inserted in newspapers (FSIs) and 3 out of 10 used coupons received by mail.

Given the diversity and expected growth of the Hispanic population in the US from 15% in 2009 to 30% in 2050, there is a big opportunity for manufacturers and retailers to introduce new products to Hispanics with the help of coupons. The key is to develop research-based promotional programs - with a coupon component - that appeal to the diversity of the Hispanic market in the US. Sensitivity towards cultural differences based on country of origin, product preferences, regional variations of the Spanish language, and levels of acculturation, among other factors, can send coupons to the trash can or get Hispanic consumers to try new products.

Work From Home Business: Coupon Publishing

Are you looking for a way to use your skills as a salesperson or as a desktop publisher to start-up a new business? I might have one idea here that is worth a closer look.

free printable coupons

Somehow, about every six weeks, a neat, orderly booklet with coupons to the local auto shop, the pizza place, the veterinarian, the beauty shop, the local florist and a home cleaning service show up on my front door. I use the pizza coupons and maybe the off an oil change and lube without ever thinking about how this booklet came to be. So I found out!

PRINTABLE COUPONS

Well, someone in my town is an entrepreneur, sells the ads, creates graphic designs for the ads, has the local printer involved and uses retired seniors to walk around the neighborhood passing out the 20 to 30 coupon booklet.

What this person does is she sells ad space in the booklet for literally pennies per coupon making sure to never have two of the same business types in print at the same time. I see many of these coupons again and again which tells me they must be working!

This lady guarantees a certain number of booklets will be distributed and charges her customers by the 1,000 coupons. Part of the distribution is door-to-door but I see some of them in a small rack at the local grocery store too.

I did some research and found that there is a lot of information on the Internet about going into the coupon business. Most of what I read was positive. There is advice on color combinations for the coupons that are less expensive than other color combinations (I didn't know that) and that printers are very competitive when it comes to bidding on this type of work.

Now the question remains can you sell the ads? Most business owners are going to be receptive to your sales call. Hand to them a color sample of a coupon. It is likely they have purchased a similar coupon ad in the past. The business owner will want a written assurance that you will distribute the number you promise so make that guarantee a strong selling point.

Your advertising fees are collected upfront so there is very little business capitalization required. Make sure the printer is paid and set aside some funds for those door-to-door seniors.

You can even purchase a mailing list or addresses by zip code and get into the bulk mailing business. Those business owners you approach would, if asked, likely say that you are doing them a favor since they do not have the time or expertise to do this on their own.

The online experts agree that the most difficult part is selling space for the very first issue. Make sure to include in your advertising contract the specific number of hand delivered or mailed booklets, that no two similar business will be in the same booklet and that each coupon will be in a classy two color publication. When the coupons start bringing in business (the pizza guy knows it works), you'll have no trouble selling ads for the second edition.

Your homework: You should do a Google search using the keyword phrase local coupon publishing business where I just got 262,000 results. Make and take notes and put the best ideas to work!

One final tip: Be sure to read up on the information about digital coupons. What a profitable sideline addition to your new business that could be!

And you've made a profit, plus you've gained four loyal customers. Everybody wins.

You can offer the coupon as part of your autoresponder series. The Psychology of Coupon Redemption

A number of serious marketing studies have been conducted over the last 25 years which shed light on how and why consumers use coupons, and what retailers and manufacturers need to pay attention to.

"My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to 99 cents a can. That's almost .00 in dog money." - Joe Weinstein

PRINTABLE COUPONS

With all kidding aside, a number of serious marketing studies have been conducted over the last 25 years which shed light on how and why consumers use coupons, and what retailers and manufacturers need to pay attention to.

First and foremost among the questions they raised is whether or not coupon redeemers are better shoppers.

Roger January 9, 2010 at 3:03 pm
"I never understood the idea that only poor people use coupons; it seems to have roots in the idea that rich people never bother to do something as mundane as clipping coupons (or worrying about reducing their spending; that's just for us non-rich folks). It seems pretty silly to me"...

In his landmark 1988 Journal of Consumer Affairs study, J. William Levedahl asserts that the greater a households income, the more coupons it is likely to redeem. However, increases in income increase redemption at a decreasing rate. Non-loyal redeemers require more valuable coupons.

After age 55, the probability that coupons are redeemed increases. This is thought to be because of the availability of increased leisure time after 55.

Results of the study were thought inconclusive, as both trends are seen here: "Loyalty towards brands that offer coupons and coupon availability are important factors in explaining coupon redemption."

FinanceDad December 29, 2009 at 12:45 pm
"I'm just too lazy, I know I should do it, but I can't. I guess I need to really start clipping them. Interesting stats to say the least though."

Another 1997 study by K. Bawa and S. Srinivasan in the Journal of Marketing Research asks whether it achieves its goals: As the importance of couponing has grown, so have concerns about effectiveness of coupon promotions. A person's coupon usage depends not only on coupon proneness, but on attractiveness of the coupon. A consumer who would not ordinarily use a coupon might use one he encounters with a high face value for a preferred brand, and/or that is easy to use.

He asserts that information about customer's coupon proneness then can be used to deliver more coupon-prone shoppers - maximizing coupon redemption rates, while minimizing promotion costs.

Couponing is suddenly gaining a lot of attention at the moment, suggesting that it is an audience which is growing in size.

Mobile Coupons and Google Local Business Listings Change Coupon Industry

Local business listings have become a significant local marketing tool that is showing the demise of the traditional yellow pages and equally the traditional coupons. The famous Stars Wars quote comes to mind "This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the end of Kenobi, and will soon see the end of the Rebellion. - Darth Vader"

free printable coupons

With the onset of mobile devices and mobile applications becoming a more useful tool to the local consumers, we have to wonder how this will affect the traditional coupons that are printed and cut using scissors. The impact we are discussing comes in three forms and we're not talking about the convenience to the local consumer.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

The first is the cost reduction for the local business from having to pay for their coupons to be printed and distributed. The cost reduction goes down to

The reason the cost to the local business is going to go down to zero is because the local business can post their coupons to their local business listing for free. Particularly with Google, although, electronic coupons through local business listings will all reduce the costs for the local business. Not only will they be able to reduce their costs, but they will see their coupons have a larger reach geographically without any additional costs.

Local business listings and business directories have been on the web for quite some time. This part is nothing new and neither is the ability for the local business to post their coupons electronically. The primary difference comes in the local consumers having the ability to obtain these coupons electronically to their mobile devices while they are about town. No longer do we need to print the coupons before we leave the house, we will have them at our finger tips when we arrive at a store. We don't' even need to plan ahead. When you arrive at a store you will be able to bring up their local business listing to see if there is a coupon available.

While this process has a significant impact upon the coupon companies (especially if they are not planning for this existing change to their business), for the local business this is good news and in order to take advantage of this cost reduction they will need to engage in their local business listing at multiple local listing websites.

Local listings are a local business marketing tool for the local business to reach the local consumer through web searches and mobile searches. As a local business or small business dependent upon the local consumer for your revenue you can tap into a free marketing tool with search engines, social communities, 411 websites and GPS websites.

Tapping into local listings as a business marketing tool starts by setting up accounts and claiming your listing at multiple local listing websites. Please do not be fooled by companies that provide a "get listed" service, because most businesses are already listed. Of course, the majority of local listings are not claimed by the business and they have incomplete or incorrect information. Your competitors therefore become the next best choice for the local consumer.

Aside from the benefits of mobile coupons, the other good news about local listings is that they show up on the first page of a search engine result based on the search term and the locality. For this reason, optimizing a website is not as necessary as having your local listing claimed and up-to-date. You can no longer need to understand the intricacies of search engine optimization (seo) of their business website.

If you're wondering why you need to manage your business listing at all these locations the answer has two parts.

The first is the local consumer who will decide which website they will use to submit their reviews and comments about a business, product or service. Equally where they will go to get your coupons. This one is probably the most important. The second is the mobile marketing industry. Google may be the 800 lb. gorilla "on" the web, but in the mobile industry, the mobile application developer will decide whose database of they will use to display on mobile devices and this includes the mobile coupons.

Certainly this local business marketing tool is going to evolve and mature over the next few years. Planning and preparing for success lies with getting started now. This may be the first time we can see into the future and not wait to be behind the eight ball.

(zero)! The second is the impact upon companies whose business is reliant on printing and distributing these coupons. This would include large corporations like Valassis and Val-Pak all the way down to the small local coupon company. The third impact is one we have discussed before related to the traditional yellow pages. Local business listings are already having an impact upon the usage of the traditional yellow pages and its effectiveness for the local business has been dwindling for years.

Do You Coupon?

Do you coupon? I do. It's amazing how those little pieces of paper mount up and fill a shoe box. Just as amazing is how much I've saved through the years and on what types of items.

free printable coupons

Before marriage, I did the shopping for my parents, my sister and myself. I learned early on in life how to stretch a buck. When I married my husband-I got custody of the shoe box.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

My newly legal partner scoffed, "What could we possibly save? A dime here, a quarter there? What good will that do?" Back then no supermarket doubled their coupons.

So I made him come with me on the next week's trip. I handed over my treasure trove to the cashier. I could feel my husband cringing in embarrassment about the pride I took in the thickness of the stack.

Our bill for the two of us totaled . Then off came the coupons. I had whittled down the amount to . Not a fortune, but I pointed out that the was better in our pocket than the market's! My darling realized that if I averaged even a week that it covered almost a month of groceries at the end of the year.

We started to make a game of it. On our calendar, I recorded my coupon savings. I still do that today. With quite a bit more success I assure you! Our first year of marriage, I wound up with a savings of 0. At the end of 2007-my total was ,958.24.

Not so bad for some scraps of paper and a few minutes of my time. Very soon after that first trip, my once red-faced new groom now started coming home very proud of the coupons he found and brought home for me to use.

Then came the coupons to use in restaurants, haircuts, dry-cleaners, new lenses for our glasses, make up, food for the animals, discounts at the vets, freebies for our kids-the list kept growing on what we could use our clippings on and how much we could save.

Thanks to diaper manufacturers, not only were our children's bottoms covered, but their bodies as well! I received free tee shirts, shoes and caps. We were sent coloring books and crayons, cameras (believe it or not-3 instant Polaroids with film and batteries and I didn't have to even pay postage and handling), picture frames, audio-story tapes with toys to go with them.

Nowadays, the freebies are far and few between, but the savings still total up! Especially during the last decade or so when most stores doubled the savings. We have saved ourselves time as well. When the kids were young and had birthday parties, I'd save the required UPC codes and the matching coupons and have a stash of books and toys ready to be wrapped and presented. I can't remember what product it was, but we used a lot of it-their promotional item were free hot wheel cars. We had so many that I never went to a toy store for a boy's present until my son's friends turned 8.

Remember this story the next time you throw out a lowly coupon-it may have let you retire a few years earlier. At the very least, you missed a really luxurious vacation!

Coupon Crack - An Addiction That Saves Money

Resting in her little chair, sitting propped up on the computer laptop, I felt "Miss Kitty," my dog puppet was sitting on a story about her coupon crack addiction. Her mouth was wide open and her hair was swept back over one shoulder. "Yes, she's a woman," I remember thinking.

Her red two piece outfit with a design of petite white hearts perfectly matched her red "Baby Gap" shoes. Yellow ribbons tied onto each ear resembled portions of a golden halo, which was partially hidden in her pure white hair.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

Miss Kitty is now 2 years old. I adopted her in April 2006. She is quiet at first glance but I am certain she has many stories to tell. The Charles Schulz' "Snoopy" character must be one of her heroes. I know this because "Snoopy" is embroidered on her blouse.

Staring into the other room, I wonder what her real story could be. Did she really purchase five Mead composition books, 2 packages of notebook paper and 1 box of BIC stick pens for 9 cents?

That is her story and she is sticking with it. She likes to shop in cost effective ways and she must know a secret if she bought 8 things for 9 cents.

One minor detail she omitted to share, her mom, "that story lady," recycled a print cartridge and received a coupon off the next purchase.

Kitty saw the opportunity to buy what she needed and save money at the same time. The entire purchase price was .09 and with the coupon in hand, the balance was 9 cents.

She focused on her plan and followed it through. That is what happens when you are addicted. Kitty is practical and addicted to saving money, which is perfectly okay with me.

Coupon Advertising - How to Advertise With Coupons

Coupons are a terrific way to market your business and gain new consumers while not having to feel a bit like a salesperson. They can be simple and fast to supply, and you can distribute them in a selection of alternative ways - which boosts your market reach. An straightforward path to take is to get coupons designed, revealed and mailed thru a voucher mailing company like Money Mailer.

If your business depends on local consumers, this may be an acceptable way to hit your target market. If you need to reach an even larger market, you may place discount advertisements in coupon books like the Entertainment book, which can cover multiple cities or counties.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

Companies whose markets frequently surf the web frequently publicize their discounts on the web. You can do this either thru your own internet site or thru online coupon directories, where people especially look for bargains. Additionally, coupons may be employed in the place of any ad - whether you publicize in print publications like papers or magazines or you publicize on the web using banner adverts, e-zines, social media sites, classified sites and more.

Your coupons can give discounts, additional free items or gifts, package specials, and so on. You can create multiple coupon campaigns across the year to bring a steady flow of attention to your company.

To keep your discounts interesting, design your campaigns around certain holidays or events. This can also help emphasize the specials are restricted time offers. You can hire a print company to design and print your coupons, but you are able to save money by designing your own with straightforward software or online programs. Then you can print individual discounts, mailing postcards, stamp the other side of business cards or submit your design as adverts to publications, mailing corporations or online publishers.

When planning your discounts, make sure you include the cut-off point or expiration date, any limitations and where and the way to redeem the discount. Also include your business contact info and site address so the prospect can call with questions or get additional information. Pictures or images can be exceedingly effective on coupons so long as they demonstrate the worth the shopper will receive. To get design suggestions, you can perform a search on Google Images for vouchers and see a selection of layouts.

Offer the best discount or deal you can afford. Your goal is to introduce your company to new consumers and get them into your shop or office. If you offer too small a reduction, your discount will not get any attention and will not attract new business. If your coupon does not spark interest or curiosity, prospects will not care about using your offer.

When you start enticing new clients with your coupons, you can begin building a coupon shopper list. Ask them if they would enjoy being notified when new discounts or specials become available. This is often as easy as their e-mail and first name. You may then contact them (for free) when you run your next coupon campaign and steadily grow your base of repeat patrons.

Pros and Cons of Coupon Clipping

Each individual has to decide whether it is worth your time and effort to plan and use coupons. These are some of the highlighted points in regards to coupon clipping.

printable coupons

Pro's of clipping coupons:

PRINTABLE COUPONS

If the product is something you use anyway. This is a big one because it is easy to get carried away when you are clipping away. If you do not eat yogurt from a tube, don't clip that coupon! If the product is something you planned on trying anyway. Using a coupon is the best way to go in this instance. If it is something new on the market, chances are there is a coupon for it, or there will be one soon enough. Can the product be substituted for something you normally use? This can save you money, if you keep an eye on items like this. Little savings really do add up. Think about all the little things you grab at Wal-mart that seem so cheap. That is why we all spend more there than any other store! Also, keep a look out for when an item goes on sale at the store and try to combine that with a coupon. Only if it is something you would use anyway, of course.

Con's of clipping coupons:

Purchasing many different items just because you have a coupon will not save you money. If the store brand version of that item is cheaper than the one you have a coupon for, even with the coupon. Internet coupons can be a waste of time, especially recently. Many stores are no longer accepting these because they are often fraudulent. If you buy the newspaper only for the coupons it is possible you are wasting more money than you end up saving with the coupons.

The most important thing is to pay attention while you shop. Try to plan your meals around your local grocery store's weekly sales. Buy store brands. Stock up on things that will not go bad that you know you will use if there is a great sale. These things alone can save you a substantial amount of money on your weekly grocery bill.
