Main Events in France

This guide is about the best and biggest events in France, it should hopefully give you some insight into these events so you can start planning next year's holiday around them!

The first is the Tour de France, which has been going on for over a hundred years where cyclists from around the world take part in one of the biggest sporting events in France. Previous winners include Lance Armstrong, Carlos Sastre and Alberto Contador. This is a great event to watch and you can find many spectators at the side of the road with a picnic and a couple of bottles of wine enjoying the race. The race lasts for 3 weeks in July and takes place all over France, so you have a chance of catching some of it!

The second event is probably one of the biggest film festivals in the world and attracts a huge amount of A list celebrities including Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Penelope Cruz. Even though this is a private film festival there is still plenty going on in Cannes to entertain its visitors and there is a big chance that you might just bump into Leonardo DiCaprio!

The third is the least well known festival and it is called the Coupe du Monde de la Patesserie or the World Pastry Cup. This involves over 60 pastry chefs from over 20 countries. There are teams of 3 people who represent each country, a pastry cook, a chocolate maker and an ice cream maker. There challenge is to make a chocolate dessert, a fruit and ice-cream dessert and a traditional dessert from their home country. All these dishes need to show their creativity and technical skill as well as taste absolutely delicious! There is one judge per country (just to make it fair) and the whole competition lasts about a day. The World Pastry Cup is held every year in January and it's a must see for those with a sweet tooth!

The forth festival is one of the most entertaining events in France, it is the Nice Carnival which is held every February and lasts for over a week! Every year the carnival has a different theme and this year its "Blue Planet", so over 20 floats will be decorated to tell the story of the "Blue Planet". There is different entertainment going on around the city including musicians, dancers and street performers. This carnival definitely adds colour and fun to a miserable winter month!
