Pumpkin season is here! In my previous article, "Fall Fun In Ontario", I briefly mentioned where to find pumpkin patches in the Greater Toronto Area. Here I will give a short list of my favourite places with some parent tips for taking young children along.
Andrews Scenic Acres,
SHOE CARNIVAL
9365 10th Sideroad, Milton/Halton Hills, L9T 2X9
Andrews Scenic Acres is a wonderful farm set below the mountains in Milton. They have many activities for children, including a playground and wagon rides. Their pumpkins are in a real pumpkin patch where you can break the pumpkin from its vine. You can pack a lunch and enjoy eating on the picnic tables. In the past they've had hotdogs and corn on the grill. They have a country store with lots of yummy treats for the family to enjoy as well. From now until the end of October, they charge a small admission fee of per person. Please check their site for updated prices.
Downey's Farm Market,
13682 Heart Lake Road, Brampton, Ontario L7C 2J5
Downey's Farm Market is a large farm with many activities for kids. There is a wooden train set, a sandbox, a climbing wall, and a trike track (with lots of trikes for kids to ride). They have a lovely area for children to see and interact with farm animals as well. Their pumpkin patch is an area with pumpkins that have already been gathered from the field. From now until the end of October, Downey's Farm holds "Pumpkinfest", which includes a lot of fun family activities. However, there is an admission fee of approximately for a family. Please visit their site for updated prices. If you do visit them you MUST try their pumpkin donuts: fabulous!
Brooks Farm,
122 Ashworth Road, Mount Albert, Ontario, L0G 1M0
Brooks Farm is a popular place on the east end of the Greater Toronto Area. They have a pick-in-the-field pumpkin patch or pumpkins that have already been gathered for you to choose from. For kids they have train rides, a corn maze, a child-sized hay bale maze, and wagon rides. From now until the end of October they are holding their Fall Fun Festival with some fun activities and shows. The admission is per person; however, check their site for full details.
Southbrook Pumpkin Patch,
1150 Major Mackenzie Dr. West, Richmond Hill, Ontario L6A 3P2
Southbrook Pumpkin Patch is a fun place that looks like carnival grounds when you pass by it. It is not located at their farm, but is a separate area they set up during the fall season. They have an already gathered pumpkin area. The area includes lots of fun activities including a kids carnival which has rides, inflatables, games, face painting and much more. Best of all: free admission!
Parent Tips:
Dress warmly and in layers. Take mittens for young ones depending on the weather. Wear shoes and pants you do not mind getting dirty. If you go to a place where you pick your pumpkin from the vine, I do not recommend taking a stroller for a baby. Take a baby carrier instead. It's also easier for wagon rides. Remember you will be carrying back some heavy pumpkins. Think about bringing a large, sturdy bag and have something laid out in the car to put the pumpkins down as they will have dirt on them.
Enjoy your pumpkin search and try renting "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" to watch with the kids afterwards.
