The new city (after 'Mdina') was founded after the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, by the Order of St. John. It was designed on a rectangular grid with wide and straight streets from one end of the hill to the other. Regrettably raids from the Second World War destroyed many of the buildings in Valletta.
